Governor Steve Bullock Receives National Award for State Service Leadership

Thursday, March 9, 2017/Categories: Governor's Office/Tags:

Governor Steve Bullock today received a national award recognizing his leadership and innovation in leveraging national service to work for Montanans. AmeriCorps State and VISTA members serving in Montana presented the award to Governor Bullock during the annual ServeMontana Symposium.

Montanans and Americans of all backgrounds are drawn to our culture of giving back and come to our state through national service,” said Governor Bullock. “It’s an honor to be part of this strong spirit of service to make our country even brighter tomorrow than it is today. To my friends of service across the state and nation, thank you.

Governor Bullock was selected by Voices for National Service, a diverse coalition of national and local service programs and state service commissions, to receive the 2017 State Leadership Award. Governor Bullock joined a bipartisan group of distinguished leaders in government, business and journalism from across the nation who were honored.

Governor Bullock is a true champion of national service,” said AnnMaura Connolly, President, Voices for National Service. “In 2015, under his leadership, Montana became the first Employer of National Service state in the west and only the second in the nation. Recognizing the unique work experience and skills gained by those who serve, Governor Bullock is committed to hiring AmeriCorps and Peace Corps alumni to serve as Montana state government staff. In recognition of his efforts to harness the power of national service members to address state priorities and to enhance benefits and opportunities for those who serve, Voices for National Service is proud to honor Governor Bullock with the State Leadership Award.”

Honorees were selected based on recognition and support for national service as a solution to some of the nation’s most pressing challenges. Each award winner has helped to raise public awareness of national service and elevate national service as a national priority.

In Montana, more than 9,000 AmeriCorps members have served more than 8.8 million hours and have qualified for Segal AmeriCorps Education Awards totaling more than $20,940,000 since 1994. In April 2015, CNCS announced that Montana tops the nation in producing AmeriCorps members and that more Montanans enroll in AmeriCorps per capita than residents of any other state.
