Governor Steve Bullock today held a ceremonial bill signing in Missoula to highlight a suite of bills that will better protect victims of sexual assault.

“It’s a longstanding and deep Montana value that we look out for our neighbors, particularly those who may be facing unbearable realities,” said Governor Bullock. “These pieces of legislation will be truly lifechanging, for the better, for our neighbors and fellow Montanans.”

Governor Bullock joined Senator Diane Sands at the Missoula City Council Chambers to highlight the passage of this bipartisan legislation to strengthen laws to protect victims of sexual assault and to help victims recover.

SB 22 and SB 26, sponsored by Senator Sue Malek, and SB 29 and SB 30, sponsored by Senator Diane Sands, provide process for terminating rights of parents who committed rape, revise registrations on the Sexual and Violent Offender Registry, eliminate the requirement that an assault involve force for it to be defined as rape, and increase the statute of limitations from ten to twenty years for sex crimes against children.
