Statement from Disaster and Emergency Services Administrator

Statement from Dan McGowan, Administrator of Montana Disaster and Emergency Services.

The outpouring of generosity from Montana is admirable and we encourage you to continue reaching out to those victims of Hurricane Katrina. Your contributions will play an important part in their recovery.

When making donations, please consider the following:

Money is the most efficient donation you can make. It is easy to manage and quickly provides victims with the immediate resources they so desperately need.

Disasters bring out the very best in most people; unfortunately, they can bring out the worst in others. It is in your best interest and most beneficial to disaster victims to contribute to credible organizations who are established and structured to manage your donations.

While you may think you are being generous in sending unsolicited food, hygiene products, used clothes, blankets, etc., most of these items go unused as they are difficult to manage and overwhelming to the receiving communities. In disaster areas it is often difficult to find a place to store these items and find the means to distribute them.

Unless specifically asked for a resource and provided with specific instructions for delivery, it is best to make a financial donation.
