MT Dept. of Revenue reminds taxpayers of April 17 filing, website help, call center hours

HELENA – The Montana Department of Revenue reminds taxpayers that individual income tax returns are due April 17 at midnight. With two weeks until the filing deadline, the department has processed about 310,000 returns and issued about 241,000 refunds totaling about $110.3 million. The average refund amount is $460.

Tax returns and extensions

If people need more time to file their tax return, Montana offers an automatic extension to file up to six months, which is by October 15. There is no form to submit to receive the automatic extension.

An extension to file a return is not an extension to pay

The automatic extension of time to file your return does not grant you an extension to pay your tax liability. People who owe a tax payment must still pay by April 17 to avoid late payment penalties and interest. Learn more about filing and payment options at or by calling the call center at (406) 444-6900. Call center normal business hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday. The call center offers extended hours on April 16 and 17, 7:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. People can also email questions to

Where’s my refund?

Taxpayers can check their refund status by visiting and clicking “where’s my refund.” This digital tool includes a progress bar showing the status of the refund with an explanation, plus instructions if the department needs more information from the taxpayer to finish processing the return.
