Great Falls – At a ceremony at the Cascade County Sheriff’s office, members of Deputy Joseph Dunn’s family were joined by Governor Steve Bullock, Sen. Ed Buttrey, Sheriff Bob Edwards, and other community members as they dedicated the Joseph J. Dunn Memorial Highway. The section of highway is located on Interstate 15 between the Ulm interchange and Gore Hill interchange, adjacent to the Sheriff’s office. The designation came as a result of a piece of legislation signed by Bullock and sponsored by Buttrey during the 2015 legislative session.

"We feel very grateful to Senator Ed Buttrey and all of those who have put forth such effort and devotion in making the Joseph Dunn Memorial Highway dedication a reality.  We are overwhelmed with gratitude at the amount of love and support displayed by the community of Cascade County and extending through all of Montana.  We believe that Joe would be humbled but very honored and we can all share in that.  This is something we always have, that the kids will always look to and be reminded of what a hero their Daddy was.  We are forever grateful," Deputy Dunn’s family said.

Dunn, 33, was killed in the line of duty on August 14, 2014 when he was struck by a vehicle being pursued by law enforcement. He left behind his wife, two children, parents, and two siblings. In addition to serving as a Sheriff’s Deputy, Dunn also served his country in the U.S. Marines in Afghanistan.

“When members of law enforcement put on their uniform each day, they do so understanding the risks, but also the importance of their work to ensuring a safe community for their families and neighbors,” Bullock said. “While we can never fully thank Deputy Dunn and his family, this highway memorial will serve as a long-lasting reminder for their service and sacrifice to Cascade County and the entire state of Montana.”\

“It was an honor to stand for Joe Dunn and his family in the Legislature in passing the bill to honor them and to remind everyone of the sacrifices made each and every day by our law enforcement heroes and their families,” Buttrey said. “The Joseph J. Dunn Memorial Highway will serve to remind each of us of the sacrifice, bravery and dedication of Joe and others who stand in the way of harm, and made the ultimate sacrifice.”

A sign designating the stretch of road as the Joseph J. Dunn Memorial Highway was unveiled at the ceremony.
