MONTANA – Governor Steve Bullock and Lieutenant Governor Mike Cooney today welcomed Montana students across the state back to school and encouraged them to take advantage of all the opportunities that will prepare them for careers or college.

As Lisa and I send our kids back to school this week, I hope every Montana student is as excited as they are to return to learning, friends, teachers and activities,” said Governor Bullock. “I also want to thank all educators, administrators and staff who work tirelessly to prepare their classrooms and schools for a new year and for delivering on the promise of a great public education for our children.”

Public education is our great equalizer, giving every Montana student the opportunity to succeed and be part of our growing economy,” Bullock continued. “Montana’s graduation rates are at an all-time high, dual enrollment has doubled, and Montana is ranked best in the nation for keeping higher education affordable. This week we celebrate those successes and continue to build on them.”

Governor Steve Bullock and Lt. Governor Mike Cooney will be traveling across the state this week highlighting innovative new education programs, initiatives, and partnerships implemented since Governor Bullock took office in 2013. They will also highlight Governor Bullock’s education priorities going into the 2017 legislative session:

  • INFRASTRUCTURE: One of Governor Bullock’s top priorities moving into the 2017 legislative session is once again to invest in infrastructure across the state, including public schools.
  • DUAL ENROLLMENT: Governor Bullock is committed to growing dual enrollment by 1,000 students next year, which will save Montana families $5.5 million. Dual enrollment allows high school students to earn college credit at minimal cost to the student and their family.
  • EARLY LEARNING: Governor Bullock will work with the Legislature to continue to increase access and affordability so that all Montana children enter kindergarten ready to succeed.
  • BROADBAND: Governor Bullock will dedicate $1 million toward broadband infrastructure matching funds, freeing up additional federal funds that will provide more Montana school districts an opportunity to upgrade.
