Governor Bullock Celebrates Completion of Hillview Apartments Rehabilitation Project in Havre

Havre, Mont. – Governor Steve Bullock today celebrated the completion of Hillview Apartments in Havre at a grand opening event. In 2013, the Hillview Apartment rehabilitation project was awarded $625,000 of low-income housing tax credits through the Montana Board of Housing. The Montana-based development team from GMD Development, LLC and Homeword Inc. were alongside Bullock for the ribbon-cutting ceremony that included residents of the complex and locals from the Havre community.

“Access to safe, quality, and affordable housing is a cornerstone of a strong community,” said Bullock. “I’d like to congratulate everyone on the successful completion of this important project in Havre.”

The Hillview Apartments were originally constructed in 1969 and have been deteriorating over the course of the last decade. The affordable housing complex of 52 units across 8 buildings has been a valuable resource in Havre for renters who earn less than $25,620 (individual) or $36,600 (family of four) annually. The contract for federal rent vouchers has been extended for another 20 years covering all 52 units.

The project sponsors, developers, and owners of this project are GMD Development, LLC and Homeword, Inc. The members of the development team were Montana-based. Along with Homeword, the contractor was Hardy Construction in Billings MT, the architect and engineer was L’Heureux Page Werner, and the attorney was Don St. Peter from Missoula.

“The economic and social benefits of this project are significant,” said Bruce Brensdal, Executive Director of the Montana Board of Housing. “By rehabilitating this complex, we are ensuring that the property remains affordable for the residents of Havre for the next 46 years and will serve the individuals and families that need it most.”

Economic activity resulting from the project includes $5,256,250 in local income, $443,750 in taxes and other revenue for the local government, 72 local jobs, and $68,750 in residential property taxes kept intact by not allowing the property to fall into disrepair.
