MT Individual Income Tax Filing Affected by Last Minute Congressional Changes

Helena – The Montana Department of Revenue announces that Congressional changes made late last week affect state individual income tax filing.

U.S. President Donald Trump signed the Bipartisan Budget Act of 2018 on Friday, February 9. The new law extends federal deductions that expired at the end of 2016, but are now available for tax year 2017.

Two extenders impact the 2017 Montana Individual Income Tax Return Form 2. They are the Tuition & Fees and the Qualified Mortgage Insurance Premium deductions. Some Montana taxpayers who will file or have already filed may want to claim either of these deductions. The department is working on changes to the 2017 Montana Form 2 to include these restored deductions.

Taxpayers can visit MyRevenue to access the revised version of Montana Form 2. Taxpayers who have already filed their returns and wish to take the additional deductions will need to amend their tax return.

Tax software companies are also updating their products to reflect these last-minute changes. Taxpayers who use software to prepare their tax returns need to make sure they’re using the most up-to-date version.

The department empathizes with taxpayers for the inconvenience. For updated information and developments, visit revenue.mt.gov, call (406) 444-6900 or email DORCustomerAssistance@mt.gov.
