Citing high-risk for new wildfire starts, Governor Steve Bullock today issued a Public Service Announcement (PSA) in partnership with the Montana Broadcaster’s Association to urge Montanans to take caution and prevent human-caused fires, and responsibly enjoy Montana’s spectacular unspoiled nature.
The risk of sparking new fires across western Montana remains extreme. All of western Montana is now in Stage II restrictions, which prohibit campfires, including charcoal fires. With the exceptions of Gallatin, Park and Daniels counties, the rest of the state is in either Stage I or Stage II restrictions. There is virtually nowhere in Montana where a campfire is allowed at this time.
While campfires aren’t currently allowed, Montana’s two national parks, 54 state parks, and all of our vibrant and charming small towns are open for business.
Each year, 60 percent of all wildfires in Montana are caused by people. That trend has continued this summer. During the month of July, Flathead County firefighters were dispatched to 241 fire incidents. The vast majority of these were human-caused, including illegal burn piles, and out-of-control campfires and fire pits. Since August 1, Flathead County’s 911 center has dispatched firefighters, resources, and law enforcement officers to 35 wildland fires and 39 illegal burn incidents. They have also responded to 21 incidents involving illegal use of fireworks since Stage II restrictions were implemented.

Hi, this is Governor Steve Bullock.
We are facing extreme fire conditions and every week, firefighters are forced to respond to wildfires caused by campfires, debris burning, and fireworks. Not only is it currently unsafe to have a campfire – across most of Montana, it’s illegal.
